Agent! Gets a Face: An Optional Speaking, Animated Avatar on New Tabs
Coming in the next Agent! pre-release, scheduled for Saturday, October 10 - an optional avatar that speaks and animates alongside the task log. Not cute, not cuddly, and not a mascot. Now in development.

Coming soon. Now in development. The next pre-release of Agent! for Mac, scheduled for Saturday, October 10, adds something the app has never had: a face.
Open a new tab and, if you want it, an avatar appears next to the task log. It speaks Agent!'s replies out loud, animates while it talks, and sits there listening while you type. It is entirely optional. Turn it off and Agent! is exactly the app you use today.
Not another Dot
The industry has settled on a look for AI companions: round, soft, child-like, cute and cuddly. Blobs with big eyes. Little glowing dots that bounce when they're happy. The idea is to make the machine feel harmless.
Agent! takes a different route.
Agent! is a tool that runs shells, edits your code, drives your apps and reads your files. It is not a pet, and it shouldn't look like one. So the avatar is a human head - a wireframe built from horizontal scan lines, lit in blue against black, looking straight at you. It reads as a machine that is honest about being a machine. No eyelashes, no giggle, no mascot. Something closer to the computer on the other side of the terminal than to a toy.
If that sounds less friendly, that's the point. The friendliness in Agent! comes from what it does for you, not from how it's drawn.
What's in the preview
Here's what the development build does today. Some of this will change before the 10th.
- Three animation styles. A Mouth mode where the face lip-syncs to speech, a Waves mode where the scan lines ripple with the audio, and Both.
- Voice picker. Choose any installed macOS voice. The screenshot shows Daniel; pick whichever one you like.
- Mood picker. A mood control (Neutral in the screenshot) that shapes the avatar's expression and delivery.
- Speaker and microphone buttons on the avatar panel, so you can mute the voice or talk back without leaving the tab.
- Off by default on existing tabs. The avatar shows on new tabs when enabled, and nothing about your current workflow changes unless you opt in.
Why a speaking avatar at all
Agent! already runs long, unattended tasks - Auto-Pilot sessions, multi-step edits, builds that take a while. A lot of the time you aren't looking at the window. A voice that says "build failed on line 212" or "done, three files changed" lets you stay with whatever you were doing and only turn around when it matters.
The animated face gives that voice somewhere to come from. When the avatar is talking, you know Agent! is talking. When it's still, it's listening or working. It's a status indicator you can read from across the room.
When
The avatar lands in the next pre-release of Agent!, scheduled for Saturday, October 10. Pre-releases are posted on the GitHub releases page before they graduate to a full release. As always, the full release follows on the first of the month once the pre-release has settled.
It's in development right now. If the look, the voices or the modes shift a little between this screenshot and the build you download, that's why.
Agent! is getting a face. Just not a cute one.
